Lumberjack Contests

The Delta Conservation District is offering three events at the DTE Foundation Lumberjack Contests. We are looking for teams of two men, two women or Jack & Jill (one male, one female) to compete. The competitions are for fun but "metals" (actually wooded) will be awards to the top three teams in each category. Register the day of the event. Make sure to sign the waiver.

CROSSCUT SAWING

Objective:
To cut a clean, complete "cookie" (disk of wood) from a horizontal log in the shortest possible time using a traditional crosscut saw. This is a timed event and emphasizes both technique and teamwork.

Start Position:
Teams must stand ready with one hand each on the saw handles
One hand must be off the saw until the signal is given.

Starting the Cut:
Upon the judge's signal, teams begin sawing through the log as quickly and cleanly as possible. A complete "cookie" must be severed and fall from the log for the time to stop.
Technique:
Only pull strokes should be used; pushing the saw can cause it to buckle or bind.
The saw must remain in contact with the log throughout the cut.

Timekeeping:
A stopwatch or electronic timing system is used.
The clock starts at the signal and stops when the cookie separates cleanly from the log.

Judging Criteria:
Time to completion.

HAMMERSCHLAGGING

Objective:
To drive a nail flush into a wooden stump using the fewest number of hammer swings. This event emphasizes accuracy, control, and steady hands.

Competition Format: Three individuals will compete head-to-head-to-head for 3 rounds
The champion will be chosen after 3 rounds
Whoever has driven the nail flush first, the most times, is determined as the winner
A tie breaker round will be used when necessary

Start Position: The nail is placed upright into the stump by the competitor or judge.
The competitor stands with their axe or hammer in hand, behind the start line.
No part of the nail may be pre-driven; it must begin freestanding or only barely inserted to stay upright.

At the Signal: On the judge’s signal, the competitor steps up and begins striking the nail.
The flat of the axe blade or hammer face is not allowed—only the poll or peen end may be used.
Competitors must fully drive the nail flush with the stump surface using as few swings as possible.

Judging Criteria: Winner is determined by whoever drives the nail flush to the stump first and moves onto the next round
