'Restaurant Week in Esky' puts focus on downtown dining

ESCANABA — Restaurants in Escanaba's downtown are getting ready to showcase what they can do for this year's Restaurant Week in Esky.

The special dining event is being held March 3-9.

"Restaurant Week in Esky is an opportunity for chefs to try something new and diners to rediscover a restaurant that they haven't been to in a while or to try a new one," said Craig Woerpel, director of the Escanaba Downtown Development Authority.

This is the second year that the Escanaba DDA has held the event.
Restaurant Weeks are held nationally to boost dining during slower times and celebrate local food and drinks.

Woerpel said there was a good reaction to last year's inaugural event.

"People were starting to get excited about it, wondering what it was and getting involved by going out to eat. It is a really good way to focus on a positive part of our community and get people out during winter when the weather might keep them in," Woerpel said.

There are 18 food businesses in the downtown. Many have posted what they are offering during Restaurant Week in Esky on the DDA's downtown website at

Grab & Go at the corner of 10th and Ludington Streets is using the event to kick off it's new breakfast service. It includes a new Breakfast Chaffle Sandwich made with waffles.

Applewood Eatery is offering $13.07 specials based on their address at 1307 Ludington Street, including their Santa Fe Salad on Friday, March 8. Bobaloon's Cafe has a special sandwich each day of the week, including a Black and Bleu Steak Wrap on Wednesday, March 6.

Cat-Man-Do's Bar & Grill is also offering daily specials. They are featuring their Prime Rib Sandwich on Saturday, March 9.

La Cantina is using Restaurant Week in Esky to debut its new Mexican Cheeseburger. Rosy's Diner has been working on a Breakfast Poutine with a heaping mound of french fries smothered in a homemade sausage gravy, cheese curds and applewood smoked bacon. It is topped with two eggs.

"And, I'm sure there will be more as Restaurant Week in Esky gets
underway. It's a fun way to shake of the doldrums of winter," Woerpel said. "Escanaba does have the longest small town downtown in Michigan and it is amazing how many restaurants there are in the downtown."
